What Are Geotagged NFTs?

Geotagged NFTs are basically digital collectibles with a twist. They come pinned to a real spot on the map. Think of it as taking street art from a wall in Berlin or New York and attaching its exact GPS coordinates to a digital token.

Geotagging itself isn’t new. It just means embedding location data, latitude, longitude, maybe even altitude, into a digital file.

Normally, you’d see this in photos or online posts that show where something was created. With NFTs, that same idea is being used to connect physical street art to its digital counterpart.

NFTs, of course, are unique digital assets that live on the blockchain (most famously Ethereum). They don’t exist in the real world the way a painting does, but they carry a certificate of authenticity that proves you’re the rightful owner.

Early NFTs were mostly profile pics, GIFs, or collectibles. Geotagged NFTs move that a step further: instead of just owning a digital file, you also get a 3D model tied to the exact place the art lives in the real world.

In some cases, the NFT even represents ownership rights to the physical street piece, meaning the digital and real-world versions are linked.

The best part for artists? They don’t have to peel a mural off a brick wall to sell it. They can keep the art intact and still earn money from it.

For collectors, it means you can “own” a mural in Paris while sitting comfortably on your couch in Texas.

The appeal is simple: they let artists keep their work where it belongs while still earning from it, and they let collectors grab pieces of global street art without hopping on a plane. Each NFT comes with unique geospatial metadata, exact coordinates, and other details that make it one of a kind.

For example, imagine someone minted a geotagged NFT of the Statue of Liberty. The token’s metadata would lock in those famous coordinates: 40.6892° N, 74.0445° W. Anyone looking at the NFT would know exactly where the “real” version stands.
